Ministry of Foreign Affairs Position on European Parliament Resolution on North Macedonia

19 May 2022

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the adoption of the European Parliament Resolution on the Republic of North Macedonia at today's plenary session of the EP in Strasbourg.

As before, under this Resolution, the European Parliament has sent out a clear political message about the importance of accelerating the European integration process and starting accession negotiations with North Macedonia immediately. The fact that the text of the Resolution was endorsed by a large number of MEPs is both encouraging and reflects the support that the Republic of North Macedonia enjoys by and across the wider political spectrum within the EU.

It is particularly important that, in the Resolution, the European Parliament has reaffirmed the strategic importance of North Macedonia and the entire Western Balkan region, as well as their futures as part of the European family. The start of accession negotiations and EU membership is a strong investment in stability, not only for the countries in the region, but also for the EU, particularly within the current security context that Europe is facing. In this regard, we welcome the call of the European Parliament for overcoming bilateral issues outside the accession process, which is both in the spirit of and adheres to the principles of the accession process. The European Parliament has also recognized the progress that North Macedonia has been making in its domestic reform process, as well as its readiness to start accession negotiations with the EU immediately.
